My thoughts about Riders of Icarus

So here are my first thoughts after reaching Lv25 and getting nearly-full Frozen Gear and starting to level my alt.



When I first got my key in CBT2 I was in love with the game. It had its flaws, like all games, but it was a good game. I was really exited for CBT3 and mostly Open Beta because I wanted to experience everything!


CBT3 was a kick in the face for me. Performance issues, latency issues, glitches everywhere... When I saw the "progress" made between CBT2 and CBT3 my excitement went to the drain and my trust in Nexon's team being able to release a good Open Beta was little... and I was so wrong!


I have yet to find a glitch in this Beta other than my Founder's Pack was something else, but I really can't complain because I used those two Elite 900m mounts to the limit. I got a Blue Bloodwyrm and even a Ruby Bloodwyrm at Lv17 that due to the height they're at (about 500m) I wouldn't have been able to get either until almost Lv25, and once the two pack mounts were removed I still had my two dragons that could reach 450m. Awesome looking mounts too :) I got quite a few "Ohhh where did you get that mount??" whispers :feelsgood:




I... don't really know very well what goes in "Gameplay" but whatever. 

Combat is Ok, some classes along the ones I've tested myself seem quite interesting, particularly Priest and Assassin are really fun. I INSIST THAT DODGING/BLINKING SHOULD PREVENT DAMAGE, PLEASE!


Crafting is strange, different from what I've seen in other MMOs. I guess its because we're in Open Beta with up to Lv25 as max level but so far, I have not yet seen an Elite/Heroic recipes that are worth it. Well I haven't even seen Elite recipes other than taming marks. I hope we get more recipes and some kind of incentive to craft (perhaps achievement rewards?) because although I usually love crafting in MMOs, in this one I don't see a reason whatsoever. Crafting is relaxing and is a good break from the boring, repetitive questing this game has. 


Questing like I said is extremely boring. If it will continue to be like this, please either increase the XP gain or reduce monster HP to do them faster, because its SO TEDIOUS. At least escort missions are not annoying like in most games.




Since CBT2 I've played Berzerker, Assassin, Priest and Wizard. My current main is a Priest, and I love it. Is really fun to play and quite complex.

In the first 15 levels differences such as damage, toughness, etc between classes is not really well defined. I hated dying so frequently with Wizard in CBT2 and damage didn't feel like it was so big that could compensate how ridiculously fast I'd die. 

Assassin felt useless at first but once I started getting used to the combos and getting more skills it was really fun to play, and finally Berzerker I won't say much because... I'm still leveling it.


After doing Lv25 dungeon I gotta say Wizard can stay as it is. Damage is ridiculously high so being one-shot by monsters in Heroic dungeons is understandable. My Wizard friend burned through Elite 5 like it was Lavalight normal. 


In PvP feels like if you get caught by a Priest along with someone else, you might as well surrender because they'll have a CC party on you, just the priest. 




Great job on this one Nexon! Those changes you made to the cash shop to prevent the game from being P2W were great, and cash item prices are excellent. Just please add a badass outfit, I dislike the ones available right now. I want my character to look badass, not like a stripper. (All my characters are female characters. Whoever designed the outfits had something against using pants? Or just something that covers your legs to a bit over the knees?)


I gotta say the 49,900 NX cash tag is quite scary, even when I know its $49.99. Such big numbers scare people




Is it just me or the game looks SO MUCH better than it did in CBT?

The game loos beautiful, although it lacks "life". It could use some more foliage and citizen NPCs in the city, but other than that is really nice.


Sound is Ok, I haven't heard any soundtrack that caught my attention yet but isn't bad either. However, I have one complain that casters are a bit annoying, saying the exact same random thing every time they cast X spell.




I support Nexon's choice of holding the level cap at 25. I'd rather have a complete experience of Lv25 and under areas instead of having the Lv50-60 cap available from start and several glitches, missing monsters and items, etc. From what I've read Nexon's team is quite small compared to other MMO teams, so they can't import an entire game to the West in such a short time, not to mention all the gameplay balancing changes they made.

I like the frequency of available dungeons and the difficulty. Lavalight is a joke, but the rest are decent and challenging in Heroics, and what is even more unusual is the huge amount of rewards, which is something I love and hope it's kept that way.




I can read Japanese quite a bit and I checked Icarus' JP Wiki... PLEASE reduce the grind. As Nexon probably already knows, Western audiences HATE extreme, incessant grind. 

Legendary mounts are the thing at end game, as you can expect, same with Legendary seal stones. Lets say that you have a total of 10 slots in your gear and you want one as mount, you need X stats for your class and X Legendary gives those stats. Legendary Marks require A LOT of items, and most importantly, a moderate amount of sealed Elite or even Heroic mounts that require Marks to tame as well. Imagine having to get 11 Marks to tame 11 Legendaries for your gear... And just 11 if you're really lucky, because you'll surely fail more than once. That sounds extremely repetitive and boring.


You need 5 Magma Hounds for his mark, so a total of 55 for 11 of them...


Also, please reduce World Bosses HP. I've seen videos of the World Bosses (they usually drop heroic/Legendary mark recipes) and it takes an HOUR to kill by people of the same level. Aint nobody got time for dat.


Overall Nexon, this is a game I feel I'll be playing for quite some time.

If you have premium you will run into very few problems, its obvious why they have done it though, to get more people to buy premium, Something that may help you out is perhaps pick up some extra dailies while your leveling or some extra repeatable quests and not wait until you need them at the end of the content area?


What are your issues with Icarus?

I tried Priest and Wizard, didn't feel amazed by either one. Priest combat was so depressing when I discovered I get 3 whole heals on a mount.
